THE FARM AND CAMP PROGRAM
Furnace Brook Farm Horsemanship Camp was established in 1994
and has educated hundreds of young equestrians. Offered throughout
the summer and during school vacations, Furnace Brook Farm Horsemanship
Camp offers children a safe and fun environment to ride and learn
all about horses. Our horses used in the camp program are safe
and lovable "veterans", allowing your child to benefit
from their experience. We work hard to create a safe and fun experience for your child.
Furnace Brook Farm is a Massachusetts licensed Riding Stable
and Furnace Brook Farm Horsemanship Camp is licensed through
the State of Massachusetts as well as the Marshfield Board of
Health.
STAFF
The staff of Furnace Brook Farm Horsemanship Camp is composed
of experienced horse persons with a passion for horses and the
ability to create a fun and educational atmosphere for our campers
to enjoy. The director of camp, Erin Van Steenburgh, is a two
time national riding champion and a licensed riding instructor
whose students are winning at the regional and national level. Kristi Haines,
also a two time national riding champion and a licensed riding instructor, acts as Head Counselor.
Counselors and junior counselors are all students and former
campers of Erin who are enthusiastic and accomplished horsewomen.
Staff undergoes a training program and the director, as well
as older counselors, is CPR certified and educated in First Aid.
The ratio of campers to staff is 3 to 1.
CAMP DAY
The camp day runs from 9am - 12pm. Each student receives at least
20 minutes of riding instruction per day. All beginner riders
have private instruction. Campers will learn to groom, tack up
and help with the daily care of the horses. Topics to be covered
include parts of the horse, equipment used, health care of the
horse, breeds, colors and markings and general nutrition of the
horse. All campers will learn how to properly show a horse in
hand as well as have the opportunity to drive a horse in harness.
For the more advanced riders, campers will cover the basics of
dressage, have the opportunity to ride bareback and participate
in a game day on horseback. Horse crafts will also be available
for campers to participate in. On the final day of the camp week,
a Parents Day will be held for campers to show their parents
what they have learned.
